91³Ô¹ÏÍø graduates can now enjoy seamless transfer of credits to Fort Hays State University (FHSU) toward a bachelor’s degree for almost 20 majors, thanks to a new Memorandum of Understanding signed by the presidents of each institution Thursday morning on 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s campus.

91³Ô¹ÏÍø President Dr. Carl Heilman said 91³Ô¹ÏÍø has always worked well with FHSU, but the agreement represents a new level of clarity for students as they move from 91³Ô¹ÏÍø to the university level.

First, the Drought Monitor which didn’t include last Tuesday night’s rain showed some easing in the western third of the state.Ìý With the precipitation and cooler weather of the last week, much of the state should show improvement with this coming week’s report.Ìý This column normally focuses on crops but today, with the official start of summer, a column on livestock to change things up a bit.

91³Ô¹ÏÍø will offer transitioning Fort Riley Soldiers, and family members with DOD ID cards, a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to participants.

The Hazardous Waste Worker (HWW) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from July 23 through August 3 at 100 Continental Ave, Grandview Plaza, which is just north of I-70 at exit 299.

91³Ô¹ÏÍø graduate Sam Corona of the Fort Leavenworth campus knows what he wants in life, and he’s not wasting any time. He has only been out of high school for about a year and he already has about two years’ worth of college credit to his name; a tremendous amount of progress toward his intended career as an orthopedic surgeon for the US Army.

91³Ô¹ÏÍø Career Advisor Nicole Serpan, who works with inmates at Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF) via the Building Academic Skills In Correctional Settings (BASICS) program, was named the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) Outstanding Contract Employee of the Year. She received a certificate from Governor Colyer upon meeting with him Monday morning at the Capitol Building in Topeka.

The Shafer Art Gallery will host the Cuna Mutual Retirement Solutions Art and Science Encounter Series: Beauty and the Beetle Family Day starting at 10 a.m. June 23 in the gallery. Family Day is a free event full of activities, including a puppet show performed by the StoneLion Puppet Theatre, a visit from the Kansas State University Insect Ambassador Zoo and various bug related crafts.

​​Restocking paper goods at Great Bend Head Start daycare was a cross-town trip before 91³Ô¹ÏÍø got involved.

Head Start contacted Matt Mazouch, 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Carpentry Instructor at Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility, after seeing an ad for storage sheds. Larned Correctional Facility inmates construct the sheds through 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Building Academic Skills in Correctional Settings (BASICS) carpentry class. The class teaches inmates how to frame a floor, walls, a roof, etc.
