Two 91³Ô¹ÏÍø instructors earned the Distinguished Instructor Award (DIA) for the 2025-2026 academic year for their outstanding efforts and were recognized at 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s commencement ceremony Friday evening in the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø Gymnasium.
The recipients were Military Programs Instructor Juan Pepi III of the Fort Riley Campus, and Keyboard Instructor and Director of Accompaniment Dr. Alejandro Avila of the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø County Campus.
Pepi III was recognized for his engaging, hands-on approach to military coursework and his commitment to helping soldiers retain and apply critical knowledge. He uses practical exercises, interactive activities, and innovative learning tools, including a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear escape room, to make challenging material understandable and applicable. Pepi III also works to ensure students receive current, relevant instruction by gathering updated resources from professional peers within the military schoolhouse.
Avila was recognized for his energetic teaching style, high expectations, and commitment to helping students grow as musicians. He has also helped elevate 91³Ô¹ÏÍø’s music program through recruitment, program development, and initiatives such as the new Community Music School, which brings families to campus, offers affordable lessons, and gives 91³Ô¹ÏÍø students hands-on teaching experience. Avila is also well known through music organizations and performances at the state, national, and international levels, and currently serves as president-elect for the Kansas Music Teachers Association.
The DIA recognizes excellence in teaching. The College’s Faculty Council accepts nominations from employees and students. A screening committee reviews the nominations and makes the selections. Criteria for the award include contributions to teaching and learning, alignment with the College’s mission, and community service. A plaque listing the award recipients' names is displayed in the 91³Ô¹ÏÍø Library.
